The demonstration, which took place on Saturday 5th December 2009, gathered 250.000-1 million (depending on the sources) protesters in Rome alone. Groups in various other cities throughout the globe organised themselves to hold demonstrations on that very day: in London there were 500 of us.
Popolo Viola London is today a totally independent group of Italian citizens living in London, who decided to keep on gathering and organising activities aimed at providing real information about the actual - dramatic - situation of Italian politics today, at contesting the actions of the politicians and at uniting all London-based Italians (or simply sympathisers), already aware of the seriousness of the situation or only beginning to grasp it thoroughly, who decide to take an active part in the reaction to this state of emergency.
We thus provide a platform for anyone who decides not to sit on the sofa, but stand up for their values and make the change really happen instead.
Among our recent activities, the sit-in in defense of the constitution, held on 31st January 2010, and the contestation of former prime minister of Italy Massimo D'Alema, who was giving a lecture at LSE on the 22nd February. A big joint demonstration, Emergency Italy, has being organised on the 13th March with the participation of Italian political parties and independent groups of Italians in the UK.
We furthermore hold regular meetings, participate in Italian-related cultural events in London and are open to any ideas and initiatives the adherents to the movement come up with, as long as they stay in line with the main values which brought us together: legality, respect, freedom.
Do we really believe that a change is possible? We absolutely do.
We believe there is one condition to achieve it: UNITY.
We believe that each person who says: 'nothing is gonna change anyways' takes Italy one step backwards.
We believe that each person who says: 'that was enough, I want to stand up and make my country a better place!' gives Italy a big push forward!
VIVA L'ITALIA CHE RESISTE!
THIS IS ITALY RESISTING!
